The Cock and Bottle (near Poole)

A traditional pub with a very interesting menu, combining pub favourites with some interesting twists.

It was nice and busy for a Monday evening. Always a good sign.

Started with a very nice pint of Tanglefoot, smooth and easy to drink.

Had a simple goats cheese starter with balsamic, with a bit of salad on the side and a sprinkle of walnuts (which I think really makes the salad). The cheese was nicely warmed but not overdone.

Then the main course, which I had had with a glass of the house rose which was fine and the other half had a glass of red (pinot), which she was very pleased with.

For the main we had a venison wellington, which I was really hoping would be good and was not disappointed.

A light and flaky lattice pastry, a mushroom pate and a simply delicious melt in the mouth piece of venison (loin if memory serves). The taste was like a perfect fillet steak with a slight gamey hint, not overpowering but there.

The veg where fairly standard, but were cooked very well and a choice of saute, boiled or chips. I would have quite liked mash.

Too full for pud but looked very good and big helpings. I would go back simply to have the venison wellington, which in my mind is recommendation enough.

Also looking forward to trying their Sunday lunch.
