Hardys Restaurant - Old Poole High Street

We've been going here for a few years now. Since before we moved to Poole.

On our first visit it was pouring with rain when we left and the owners gave us a large golfing umbrella to get us back to our hotel. The said we were welcome to it, so long as we didn't return it!

In fact the quality of the food and the friendliness of the service in this restaurant was certainly one factor in our decision to move to the coast from London.

The area is renowned for its fresh fish so finding a good seafood restaurant in the area was a must. Having said that they also do a very good steak!

The restaurant is located on the old High Street close to the quayside and must have originally been a shop or terraced house. It is quite small inside but not cramped. You do however feel you are eating in some one's front room, which I really like. The look of the restaurant has an old world french theme in its pictures and decor.

Service is always very charming and attentive. Fresh rolls and olives are provided while you wait for your first courses.

On the last visit I started with a local fresh crab salad, which was both light and fresh, with a very clean flavour. To follow a huge and meaty skate wing in a classic caper and brown butter sauce. The veg as always were fresh and well cooked, but maybe not the most exciting selection. The skate wing however was delicious and the others looked on enviously as this was by far the biggest portion of fish.

To finish two of us had a yummy hazelnut meringue with fresh cream and raspberries. The restaurant is a family business and the daughter does the main cooking while Mum makes proper puds.

Our friend had a great Irish coffee and the bill as always including a bottle of wine and a few beers came to about £45 a head including a tip. As always we rolled out vowing to only have a couple of courses on our next visit, but you and I know that not going to happen.
