The Crown - Poole Old Town

This establishment can be summed up very easily. A proper pub with proper food and good service. Not necessarily the warmest of welcomes, but very polite and the thing is that doesn't matter because it just feels like a well run pub and you know exactly what to expect.

We always sit in a booth. The pub feels like something from 20 odd years ago which I personally see as very positive and the music is 50's and 60's hits which just adds to the atmosphere.

A reasonable choices of draught beer, although a bit restricted on the cider to Strongbow on draft. However everything is very well kept.

So what to eat here. Well in our experience definitely the Sunday lunch. Huge helpings of meat, fresh veg and a cauliflower cheese on the side. Obviously gravy and all condiments, i.e. mustard, mint sauce, horseradish all come as a matter of course depending on what meat your order. Thankfully nothing in a sachet.

If you want another pint the bring it to your table. If you are feeling foolish after Sunday lunch or the booze has lulled you into a false sense of security then have a pud. Puds are not as strong as the mains but functional. A roast and a pudding for just under £10.

You roll out having had exactly what you wanted and vow next time not to have the treacle tart but you know greed will get the best of you.

Other recommendations are from their weekly lunch menu. Their beef pie was excellent, lots of meat and well made pastry and a really good fish and chips. The fish in particular had a crisp batter and flesh was moist and tasty. A lot of pubs in Poole claim they do a great fish and chip and this one really does.

We did go in the evening and I had a T-bone steak. Again no complaints on the portion and it was well-cooked, but the price meant you have more evening options elsewhere in Poole.

Highly recommended.
