Cafes in Southborne and Hengistbury Head

The first thing you notice is Southborne has quite a traditional high street. Less chains and lot more independent shops, it is also a surprisingly long road with all the local shops along this road.

We had arrived fairly late on Sunday afternoon and it was nice to find a a few places open. The Bake House seemed the most welcoming. Comfortable and the papers to read.

We ordered a cappuccino and a latte and two toasties. One ham and cheese and one chicken and bacon.

The cappuccino I am pleased to say was good, mainly because it had a bit of bite to it. By this I mean you could actually taste the coffee. Unlike the foamy chocolate covered coffee flavoured milk that passes for a cappuccino.

Both toasties were good. I wouldn't say exceptional, but very filling and good value.

We were both fairly fully after this and walked it off with a visit to Hengistbury Head which was very impressive. After a restorative walk and watching a brilliant sunset we were both parched. As much of a cliché as it is there is nothing better than a pot of tea when you are a bit chilled and thirsty. There is a cafe on-site (Hiker Cafe)which looks recently modernised. We had a cuppa and some chocolaty snacks. There also seemed to be a variety of food.

They also had the good sense to stay open a bit longer past their closing hour as there was clearly plenty more custom – well done.
